  • What's so important about digitizing?
So many things! Here's a list: Wondering whether you should convert your memories? There are several reasons for doing it, such as the fact that USB, DVD, and Cloud Storage are each a durable format that will withstand the test of time. Video tapes& Audio Cassettes are a lot more delicate and fragile, so they can get damaged easily. From water and heat damage to magnetic and physical damage, not to mention how VHS tapes & audio cassettes can degrade over time, you risk losing your valuable memories if you don’t convert them into another format. 8mm, Super 8, 16mm & 35mm film: Due to moisture, or temperature, over time the acetate base can decompose, giving off, as a side product, free acetic acid, which is released first inside the film base then diffuses to the surface. Literally, the film will begin to smell like vinegar. Worse yet, once the free acetic acid reaches a certain absolute point, the reaction becomes "autocatalytic", feeding on itself and causing an exponential jump in the creation of more acetic acid. In addition, film becomes extremely brittle in unoptimal storage conditions. Colors shift dramatically only within 5 years after being initially shot. It's unfortunately an inevitable issue. These issues will eventually result in a film condition being beyond able to be saved and digitized. Printed Photos: The main type of photo ruination comes in the form of UV light exposure. The process of photos fading due to sunlight is called photo-degradation, which a surprisingly apt and descriptive word. What basically happens is that sunlight shines on the plastic materials that make up the colors in pictures and excites them. When the molecules in the plastic get too excited from the light, they start to break down. That breakdown is bad news for prints, and the result is that the pictures fade.
